What to Expect
Morning: Magic at the Gate of Heaven
To begin the Bali Instagram Tour, there’s a stillness to Pura Lempuyang in the early morning that no photograph can fully capture. As the first light filters through the jungle canopy and the mist begins to lift from the valley below, you’ll approach the famous split gate, which is two ancient stone pillars that perfectly frame the cone of Mount Agung in the distance. It’s a composition so naturally perfect it almost feels staged.
Our driver knows exactly when to arrive to give you the best shot at a shorter queue and cleaner light. While waiting for your turn at the iconic gate, the surrounding temple complex offers plenty more to explore: rattan arch frames overlooking the mountain, lotus ponds that mirror the sky, and moss-covered shrines that have stood for centuries. This isn’t just a photo stop, but it’s a place that quietly stays with you long after you’ve justify.
Midday: Walking on Water at Tirta Gangga
After a satisfying lunch at a local warung, the journey continues to Tirta Gangga Water Palace, one of Bali’s most underrated gems. Built in 1946 by the last King of Karangasem as a royal bathing and meditation retreat, this 1.2-hectare garden complex feels like stepping into another era entirely.
The highlight for most visitors is walking across the stepping stones laid over the palace’s main pond that is surrounded by enormous, friendly koi fish in every color imaginable. The photos here are effortlessly beautiful: clear water, living color swirling at your feet, lush tropical gardens framing every angle. The blend of Balinese and Chinese architectural influences throughout the grounds gives every shot a unique, layered quality that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.
Afternoon: Hidden Paradise at Virgin Beach
No day in East Bali is complete without Virgin Beach, and arriving in the early afternoon means you’ll have it at its most golden. Tucked between dramatic green headlands, this crescent of white sand and turquoise water is the kind of beach most travelers spend years trying to find and we bring you straight to it.
Swim, sunbathe, or simply sit at one of the beachside warungs with a cold drink and let the day settle in. The cliffs, the color of the water, and the near-total absence of crowds make this one of the most photogenic and peaceful spots in all of Bali. It’s the perfect closing scene for a day that started before sunrise.
Insider Tips
After years of running this route, here’s what our guides wish every guest knew before the tour:
- Arrive at Lempuyang as early as possible. Queue times at the Gate of Heaven can stretch to 90 minutes or more during peak season (July–August). A 06:00 pickup puts you ahead of the curve literally. The light is also significantly better in the morning than midday.
- Dress respectfully for the temple. Pura Lempuyang is an active, sacred Hindu temple. A sarong and sash are required to enter. These are available to borrow at the entrance, but bringing your own is more comfortable and avoids any last-minute scramble.
- Wear comfortable, closed footwear. You won’t need to climb all 1,700 steps to the summit, the iconic gate is near the base. But the paths around the temple complex are uneven stone, so good footwear matters more than most people expect.
- Pack for the beach. The morning at Lempuyang calls for respectful temple attire, but by afternoon you’ll want a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a towel for Virgin Beach. A dry bag for your phone is a worthwhile addition if you plan to wade in.
- Keep drones on the ground at the temple. Drone flights are strictly prohibited within the Pura Lempuyang complex. Drones are generally fine at Virgin Beach, but always check local regulations beforehand. Rules in Bali can vary by area and season.
