Forget the Hotel Buffet

Hello, fellow food lovers! Hotel food is safe. You know what you will get. But it is often not special. It does not have a story. Real Balinese food is full of stories. It is made with love and history. You need to try it.

The best food is not in fancy places. It is on the side of the street. It is in small warungs. A warung is a simple local eatery. It might look a little scary at first. But trust me. You should try it on your Bali Food Tour. The flavors will blow your mind.

My Amazing Bali Food Tour Day

Hello, fellow food lovers! In the first place, I wanted to do it right. Surely, I did not want to get lost. I also wanted to understand what I was eating. So, I booked a tour with a local company. I used “Bali Touristic”. They were fantastic. My guide was named Putu. He was so friendly and knew everything about food.

We started early in the morning. The sun was not too hot yet. Putu picked me up from my hotel. We did not go to a restaurant first. We went to a traditional market to start our Bali Food Tour.

Stop 1: The Morning Market

A Balinese market is a busy place. It is full of colors and smells. People are buying and selling. Putu showed me all the strange fruits. I saw red dragon fruit. I saw spiky salak fruit. We tried a sweet mangosteen. It was so juicy and good.

I saw baskets of fresh spices. There was turmeric, galangal, and lemongrass. These are the secret to Balinese cooking. They make the food smell and taste amazing. Putu explained everything. He made me feel comfortable.

Stop 2: Breakfast Time – Nasi Campur

After the market, I was hungry. We went to a small warung for breakfast. Putu ordered us “Nasi Campur”. This means “mixed rice”. You get a plate of white rice. Then, you add many different things to it.

First, I had some spicy chicken. After that, I had a fried egg. Next, I had green beans with coconut. Then, I also tried a little piece of “sate lilit”. It is a satay made from minced fish. The satay is wrapped around a stick of lemongrass. It was so flavorful. I never would have ordered this by myself. I was so glad Putu was there to help.

Stop 3: Cooking Like a Local

Next, we did something really cool. We visited a family compound. A Balinese family lives together in a big home. They have a temple and a kitchen. The grandmother was cooking. She showed us how to make “base genep”. This is the basic spice paste for Balinese food.

She used a big stone mortar and pestle. She ground all the fresh spices together. The smell was incredible. She let me try to grind them too. It was hard work! As a food lovers, his made me appreciate my food even more.

Stop 4: Lunch Feast – Babi Guling

Lunch was the big event. We had “Babi Guling”. This is famous suckling pig. The whole pig is stuffed with spices. Then it is roasted slowly over a fire. The skin becomes super crispy. The meat is so tender and juicy.

We shared a big plate. It had rice, the pork, spicy vegetables, and a special soup. As a food lovers, it was one of the best things I have ever eaten. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Stop 5: Sweet Treats

No Bali food tour is complete without dessert. Bali has wonderful sweets. We tried “klepon”. These are little green rice cake balls. They are filled with liquid palm sugar. You bite into them and the sugar bursts in your mouth. It is a fun surprise.

We also drank fresh coconut water. It came straight from the coconut. Truly, it was cool and refreshing. Perfect for a hot day.

Stop 6: Evening Bites – Night Market

As the sun went down, we visited a night market. It was a different world. The air was filled with the smell of grilled food. We tried “martabak”. It is a thick, stuffed pancake. You can have it sweet with chocolate and cheese. Or you can have it savory with egg and meat. We tried both. They were delicious.

We ended the tour with a warm cup of “jamu”. Jamu is a traditional herbal drink. It is made from turmeric, ginger, and honey. Actually, it tastes a little bitter but very healthy. As a food lovers, it was the perfect way to end our eating adventure.

Why a Bali ood Tour is the Best Idea

You might think, “I can find this food myself.” Maybe you can. But with a guide, it is so much better.

First, you do not have to worry. Your guide takes you to the cleanest and best places. Second, you learn the stories behind the food. You understand the culture. Third, you try things you would never order alone. It is an adventure for your taste buds.
